The rule is two-thirds of the bed
Almost every mistake above a bed is a scale mistake. One small frame floating over a headboard makes the whole wall look unfinished, and the fix is arithmetic rather than taste: the art should span roughly two-thirds of the bed's width.
A 4'6" double is 135cm wide, so it wants about 90cm of picture — our 90×30cm letterbox, or an A1 hung landscape at 84cm. A 150cm king wants around 100cm and a 180cm super king around 120cm, which is wider than a single frame we sell off the page: hang a pair of 60×20cm with a 5cm gap, or send us the measurement and we'll quote one long frame.
Then leave 20-25cm between the top of the headboard and the bottom of the frame — close enough to read as one arrangement, far enough that nobody knocks it sitting up. The long sizes live on our panoramic framing page .

What size art goes above a bed?
Two-thirds of the bed width. A 135cm double wants about 90cm of picture (90×30cm, or A1 hung landscape); a 150cm king about 100cm; a 180cm super king about 120cm. Above 90cm a single frame becomes a made-to-measure quote, so most people either drop to a pair or ask us to price one long piece.
How high above the headboard?
Leave 20-25cm between the top of the headboard and the bottom of the frame. Don't centre it on the wall — centre it on the bed, and ignore the usual eye-level rule, because you look at this wall from the doorway and from lying down, never standing in front of it.
Can I use two frames instead of one?
Yes, and it's the honest answer for a king or super king. Two 60×20cm or 60×30cm frames with a 5cm gap span 125cm and read as one piece. Keep both frames and both mounts identical — a mismatched pair above a bed looks accidental.
Landscape or portrait?
Landscape, almost always. A bed is a wide horizontal object and a portrait print fights it. The exception is a tall narrow wall behind a single bed, where one upright piece works.
Is the glazing safe over a bed?
UK orders ship with glass, which looks better at these sizes. If the frame is going above a child's bed or a bunk and you'd rather have shatterproof acrylic, ask us before you order and we'll fit it.
What do people actually hang there?
A panorama from a trip is the most common, then a photo collage of the family, then a custom map of somewhere that matters to the couple. All three go through the same customiser and the same frames — pick the shape first, the subject second.
